upcycle a diaper box into a festive container
We just finished the Christmas decorating and the boys (D-Man and Big-C) were playing with the Little People Nativity set and the Christmas story books were instantly scattered around the room. So I thought, we just emptied a box of diapers I could turn that into a book box. Go down to the basement get my homemade Mod Podge, Christmas wrapping paper and once the boys were both asleep I could get my craft on!
The items I used were an old diaper box, knife/scissors for cutting, homemade Mod Podge (I saved the only container I’ve ever bought and just fill it up with the homemade stuff when it gets empty), foam brush and a surface to work on (the kid’s craft table).
First I cut the box to the size and shape I wanted to easily use for our various sized books. I made sure all the books fit and we still had room for more.I unrolled the wrapping paper and got to tracing the sides. I labeled the sides on the blank side of the paper so I wouldn’t lose track of where I was planning on placing the pieces. Half way through I realized that some of my Santa heads were going to be upside down, so those ended up on the inside of the box. I made sure the right side up heads were on the outside of the box.I first glued on the pieces that folded over the edges of the box to get a cleaner look. When decoupaging with paper you have less bubbles if you use a thin layer of glue on the surface, let is slightly dry before you add paper. I don’t add any additional glue to the back side of the paper. Get the paper in place and smooth out the bubbles as best you can. I feel that paper is the most bubbly material when decoupaging, and the thinner the paper the more bubbles I get. If you are doing overlapping paper allow the first layer to dry prior to adding the overlapping layer of paper. The final sealant of glue is added over the whole project when it is completely dry (I sealed mine the next night). After that drop the books inside and place it where the little dudes can grab a book, and put it away when they are done (yep we’ll see).
Now onto the next project…..I’m thinking a new wreath for the front door…..
